Summertime Movie Blues

How many times have you watched a movie in the theater and gone back to see it again? How many times have you seen a movie on DVD, VHS, laserdisc or VideoCD and gone back and watched it again... and again... and again.

Of the vast collection of movies I've seen on DVD, VideoCD and VHS, here is a short list of the ones I have gone back to watch and enjoy again. Sometimes months passed between viewings, sometimes years. Some I prefer to watch alone. Some I enjoy watching in the company of others. These are roughly in order of the number of times I've watched each picture.

Van Helsing although I have no idea why, this is the movie that our household has watched the most with Rent a very close second! It can't be that many, but it seems like I've watched Van Helsing HUNDREDS of times.

Rent - it's the music, I guess!

The Ninth Gate - of all the Johnny Depp movies out there, this one I like best.

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger - of all the Sinbad movies out there, this one I like best.

Dhoom:2 - again, it's the music!

No Country For Old Men - No movie for the weak-hearted!

Not on the short list: The Charlie Chan series of films and The Marx Brothers movies, all of which I've watched countless times throughout my life via TV, DVD, VCD and VHS. I've also seen all of the Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones pictures, the Beatle's "Help" and "A Hard Day's Night" and many of the wonderful "film noir" era movies. and then there's Ichi...

Because, like the fine publication Tablet, whom I borrowed this concept from, I too am committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing I'm able to provide, all free of charge. I take pride in my loyal readership, and I'm thrilled that you choose to engage with me in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse).

I'm asking people who'd like to post comments on my blog to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping me bring you the provocative and/or entertaining articles that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with me FREE of charge via Facebook comments and Google+ comments! You can also reach me via Twitter @davelucas

I hope this new largely symbolic measure will help create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all! Those of you who choose to contribute, thanks for your support.
