Alessi's Ark plays The Mystery Spot's Music For Front Porches series in Phoenicia Saturday, June 1st @ 1 PM - FREE!

You're invited to come on down to Phoenicia's Main Street on Saturday, June 1st for an intimate acoustic performance by Alessi's Ark (singer-songwriter Alessi Laurent-Marke) on the front porch of vintage/vinyl shop Mystery Spot Antiques. The music starts at 1 PM. As with all of the Music for Front Porches shows, it's absolutely FREE, and all are welcome.

We’re thrilled that Alessi is flying over from London to the US to tour in support of her wonderful new album The Still Life (Bella Union), and that her first stop is Phoenicia NY, a tiny and magical hamlet in the Catskill Mountains just a few hours north of New York City.

Furthermore, as part of the Mystery Spot's sister musical project, Dittypalooza!, Alessi wrote and recorded a delightful Mystery Spot Ditty in her London bedroom, which you can hear at this link.

Says Alessi: "I found the chords on the guitar immediately after looking through the beautiful photographs of the Mystery Spot's nooks and crannies. I was blown away at just how fast the song revealed itself - - it must be down to the Mystery! I tried to imagine the scent and atmosphere of the shop, its surrounding environment and how the floorboards sound as visitors wander around. A gem."

Alessi first began writing and performing at the age of sixteen, and was quickly signed to Virgin/EMI, recording her debut album Songs from the Treehouse (produced by Mike Mogis/Bright Eyes) when she was eighteen. In fact, Mystery Spot proprietress/artist Laura Levine was commissioned by the record label to paint the album's cover art, which is how she and Alessi first met.

Mariah Carey malfunction

I knew something would happen to spark up the Holiday weekend!

The NY Daily News described it as "suffered a profanity-peppered wardrobe malfunction on "Good Morning America" Friday,"...

This isn't the first time ditzy acidic salty-tongued diva Mariah carey has had a "wardrobe malfunction" (and it will likely not be the last!) I'm beginning to wonder if these events are strategically pre-planned to generate interest? Prop up the ol' career?

Here's Michelle Carlbert's wrap along with video of the wardrobe malfunction...

Rainy Day... Holiday Weekend

Here I am on a Friday morning, planning out my day. The sudden early hot humid early preview of summer is now over. Here in New York we are in for a couple of days of rain and coller temperatures. The TV weatherdude seems to think we'll hit 70 on Memorial Day. Yes, I'll be at the bbq Monday, grilling away. It's a thanksgiving day for me, a day to remember the men and women who fought and died for our freedoms, freedoms that are being pulled out from under us.

By the time Tuesday rolls around there's no telling what new material might have hit the news fan. I'm glad Anthony Weiner has decided to run for Mayor here in New York City. If anyone is the poster child for 'we are only human' it is he.

I keep running into people who are worried about the coming of Obamacare. I keep hoping that something will be done to ease the financial burden on American students (UAlbany is gearing up a new 'fast track'program that looks very promising) who are being victimized by greedy colleges - it all leads back to the big banks and the fat cats and those we call the one per cent.

Well, I have errands to run, places to go and people to meet. I'll be working on my writings throughout the holiday weekend. My smartphone will keep me connected to the digital world, which as soon as I upload this post, will be going on the back burner 'til tuesday.

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

            Jes Hudak

Saratoga Springs, NY – A dynamic roster of bands is slated to compete live at SPAC’s Battle of the Bands, on Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m. before an audience and a panel of celebrity judges for the chance to win one of two titles and accompanying prize packages: “judge’s choice” and “audience choice.” Tickets are on sale now at

“This year’s competition will be one for the record books with a line-up of top-notch bands who possess immense artistry, originality, and a plethora of musical gifts,” said Marcia J. White, President & Executive Director.

The full list of finalist bands includes:

7 P.M. | Ghosts on 33rd: Combining emotion with a heavy melody, Ghosts on 33rd strives to connect to their fans through their lyrics. Currently the band is working on their first E.P. Hailing from Granville, NY, the band describes their sound as melodic hard core.

7:20 P.M.| A Little More Us: The Washington County, NY pop and rock and roll group is fresh off their debut release of “American Loser” which earned wide acclaim. The band is working on their newest E.P. “The Dirty Truth”.

7:40 P.M.| Call Security: The public vote winner, Call Security is a young alternative rock group is from Averill Park, currently based out of Hobart and William Smith colleges. Since its founding last year, the band has performed in many different venues, even opening for the Passion Pit last spring. According to lead vocalist Ben Scheibel, the band has been told that their songs have a “Mumford and Sons feel” and others more closely resemble “Grouplove and Neon Trees.”

8 P.M. | This Renaissance: This Renaissance headed to New Windsor, NY to record their newest single “Forgive Her, Forget Him”, with the legendary John Naclerio at Nada Recording Studios to be released in summer of 2013.  The band’s sound draws combined inspiration from bands like Story of the Year and Sleeping with Sirens, combining power driven rock with catchy melodies. They’ve shared the stage with bands including Jamie’s Elsewhere, Icon For Hire, and Black Veil Brides and proven they can meet the challenge of winning over crowds outside their genre.

8:20 P.M. | The Lucky Jukebox Brigade: The seven-piece ensemble engages an eclectic crew of instruments including bass, drums, viola and violin, a 3 piece horn section, a second drumkit featuring djembe, conga, guira and more, fronted by Deanna DeLuke and her baritone ukulele.  Their debut album "Pretty Well Damned" was released on May 18th. The gypsy rock orchestra band also recently completed a summer tour from their hometown in Albany, NY to Austin, TX and back.

8:40 P.M. | VONTUS: This young alternative rock trio from Queensbury attributes their sound to influences such as Kings of Leon, John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Neon Trees. They are currently working on original music in the studio and already have their first recordings on iTunes now.

9 P.M. |The Margo Macero Project: Returning to SPAC’s Battle of the Bands, Margo Macero recorded her first E.P. “It Is What It Is,” and now leads her musical career fusing rock, blues and soul. A Glens Falls native, Margo studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Known to deliver bone-chilling performances with aggressive guitar solos and power house vocals of pure soul, Macero has been compared to Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Joss Stone and Steven Tyler.

9:20 P.M.| The Racer: The Racer, hailing from the northern suburbs of NYC, mixes its creativity and pop sensibility equally with determination and kinetic energy. The success of their debut album, 2010’s Strangers We’ll Become has ushered in a growing list of professional accolades including numerous placements on TV shows such as MTV’s Jersey Shore, The Real World: New Orleans, and The Challenge, and inclusion of the single “Couch Sitting Rattlesnake” on the hit video game Rock Band 3. The band has also cultivated an incredible following with their tours of the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and West Coast and performances at Austin, TX’s Red Gorilla Music Fest, Milwaukee, WI’s Summerfest, and opening slots for headliners such as Say Anything, Matt and Kim, and Rusted Root, among others.

9:40 P.M.| Jes Hudak: A runner-up on Bravo’s television show “Platinum Hit”, Jes Hudak is an upstate New York native whose career has been skyrocketing since her track “Different Worlds” was showcased in the promotional campaign for “The Voice,” Australia. The result has been a whirlwind of attention from fans down under, propelling Jes’s version of “Different Worlds” to the Number 6 spot on the Australian iTunes chart and attaining gold status. The groundswell of fans and attention from the music industry has led to the June 15th release of Jes Hudak’s song, “Another Day” from her National Holiday album, scheduled for release later this year in Australia. Hudak was also named one of Music Connection Magazine’s Hot 100 Unsigned Artists.
10 P.M.| Rites of Ash: This electronic pop/hard rock band combines countless influences including Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, RedOne and Lady Gaga, resulting in a unique sound.  Rites of Ash has collaborated with Pablo Manzarek, the son of Ray Manzarek of ‘The Doors’, world-renowned DJs Idee and Paul Edge, photographer Doug Sonders, and Grammy-winning engineer Kevin “131” Gutierrez. Their current album, She’s Out for Blood, was released in July 2012. The group has begun working with Grammy-winning producer Jeff Bova on a new album, set for release in 2013.

New this year, two winners will be announced; a selection made by the celebrity judges and the audience favorite. The judges’ selection will win the opportunity to play on one of Webster Hall’s stages, 25 hours of studio time at The Recording Company, airplay on northeast radio station WEQX, and custom t-shirts and stickers by Saratoga Statement; the audience favorite will have the opportunity to perform at SPAC before an event. This year’s judges are: Richard Pawelczyk of NYC’s Webster Hall, Donna Eichmeyer of Live Nation, and Greg Haymes editor and musician.

Arissa Cheo Family Photos 2013

After vacationing in China, it's time for Arissa Cheo, now approaching "old maid" territory, to follow the footsteps of many other "hot blogging babes" on the mid-2000's era and get married. 34-year old Vanness Wu is the likely husband-to-be, with rumours the lovin' couple will tie the knot in July.

We all know the story of how Arissa Luna (Cheo) has been a model - a blueprint - for Dawn Yang Yeo to make like a Skorpii and vis plastic surgery, morph into Arissa Luna Junior, the Moonfruit plastizilla. But did you know there is a photo of Arissa Cheo that the blogebrity herself HATES and has tried to expunge from the internet?

Blogger's Block ::: Do Not Fret

Not quite "Blogger's Block," but I just noticed I haven't posted anything since Monday. A rather long stretch for me. Alas, i have been busy working and commuting back and forth between Albany and New York City. I did attempt to post to my WordPress blog during a news assignment earlier in the week, but after taking the time and making the effort to do so from my phone, all I got was "WordPress Server Busy, Try Later" - and with that my draft vanished forever! And if I may say so, it was so clever and perfect there was no point in trying to re-create it.

Then the next day, here on old reliable blogger, a very similar thing happened, and for the first time ever, the post did not automatically save itself! Here's the error:

We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request.
When reporting this error to Blogger Support or on the Blogger Help Group, please:
  • Describe what you were doing when you got this error.

This information will help us to track down your specific problem and fix it! We apologize for the inconvenience.

Paradigm Time!   Remember the old saying "think outside the box?"

It's not really "old" - people still do it! But how do you fine-tune your mind to discover what's right in front of you? Perhaps by reading more; certainly by assigning yourself a schedule of activities. I just did this for myself, and I used as a model a local college's six-week summer program brochure.

My goal is to keep myself thinking and doing things in a 'fast forward' mode and spirit: NOT rushing through tasks and learning endeavours, but jumping ahead to those on or beyond 'the cutting edge.'

This initiative began last week when I picked up a copy of the mid-90s book ---paradigm--- it set those little gears inside my head a'whirring...

A fine example of unique thinking appears in an article on about a movie. Not just any movie, but one filmed in 2012 via Samsung smartphone. Hassan Khan’s “Blind Ambition” truly is a picture you must see!

And here's a snippet or two of life-lesson style advice:

“Don't limit a child to your own learning, for she was born in another time.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

"Failures do not mean you cannot try again. Take classes, read books, attend workshops about how to be a better husband or wife or dad or mom, work hard on it and work even harder even if you feel you did enough for your family." ~ Helen Chen.

Resolving Reddit's “You've submitted too many links recently. Please try again in an hour.” message

Seen on the reddit forum: "You've submitted too many links recently. Please try again in an hour." This is really stupid and it would be nice if someone gave specific instructions about how to overcome this."

The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act

The biggest banks in the country—the ones that wrecked our economy and cost millions of Americans their jobs—pay next to nothing on the debt they owe the government, while students pay nine times as much. That isn't right.

That's why US Senator Elizabeth Warren introduced the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act to let students take advantage of the same low rates offered to banks for one year while Congress finds a fair, long-term solution on student loan interest rates.
The interest rate on federal subsidized Stafford student loans is set to increase from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. If Congress doesn't act soon, millions of college students will see their student loan payments jump.
Some argue that it's too expensive to keep government loans at low interest rates, but the federal government makes low interest loans all the time—just not to everyone. Big banks can borrow money through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%.
That's why I started a petition on MoveOn's petition site which says:
Wall Street banks—the ones that wrecked our economy—should not be getting a better interest rate on their government loans than young people trying to go to college.
Unlike the big banks, students don't have armies of lobbyists and lawyers. But they do have us.
Let's do what's right and bank on students.

RELATED ::: [The Atlantic] How Colleges Are Selling Out the Poor to Court the Rich - If the federal government were to take all of the money it pours into various forms of financial aid each year, it could go ahead and make tuition free, or close to it, for every student at every public college in the country.

Will it ever happen? I believe it could... What about you?

10 Questions For Blogging Communards

Improving / Enhancing the 2 way:

Now that we have firmly established the fact that blogs are not going away, let's think about and discuss everything related to the craft. Blogging is sweet. Everyday people blog. Politicians blog. Celebrities blog. People become celebrities via blogging. Blog themselves develop 'personalities' over time.

What is your story? What is your unique personal blogging experience? Are you simply keeping a diary or chronicle? Are you blogging to inform? Are you blogging for fame or fortune or as a hobby? Why did you begin a blog? What or who got you started?

I have a few questions for you. Answer as many or few as you like. After the jump you can read my responses. The process here is a very simple one: answer the questions then leave a comment, if you like, review / comment / interact with other readers...

(1) What are you thinking when you write a new article, publish a new post? Do you want to share information? Share a personal experience? Propose a new idea or theory? Entertain?

(2) Before publishing, are you able to spell-check your post and verify grammar usage? Do you even think about it or care?

(3) How do you add and/or edit graphic images and photos? Do you create original material or do you "borrow" from other places. If you "borrow" do you check copyrights?

(4) Do you check for keywords that would apply to your article? Do you look to see if the subject matter appears in Google Trends or is trending on Twitter?

(5) Do you check to see if other blogs/bloggers are publishing articles similar to yours? Do you try to analyze blogs that you regard as 'competitors'?

(6) Do you routinely 'audit' or otherwise check your blog's statistics? Are you aware of who your readers are and where they are coming from? Do you 'interlink' posts and set links to open new windows or tabs so you won't 'lose' a reader by accident or distraction?

(7) Can your readers easily communicate with you and vice-versa? Do you keep a watchful eye on comments and respond to them in a timely manner?

(8) Once in awhile do you e-mail an old or new reader to deepen the bond? Is it easy for new readers to navigate through your blog, and is it easy for them to 'get a feel' of what your blog (and perhaps you) are all about?

(9) Do you leave a trail of breadcrumbs for others to follow? Do you comment on other blogs? Are you active on twitter, sina weibo, facebook, LinkedIn, etc.?

(10) 2 Questions (for facebook users*)

As a blogger, how do you use Facebook to interact with your readers / followers?

Have you looked into the benefits of a fanpage over those of a personal account?

Blogging Is A Disease

We are the carriers.

Welcome to Friday. It's been a busy week for those in the news media, especially here in New York. I don't quite know what happened to me last night, but I was on some sort of rare music trip, populating the sites of Vimeo and YouTube. Then later, I think it might have been around 1am, I had the radio on in the bedroom and the network news boomed out "get ready to pay for those youtube videos." Once again I wonder if people would be that stupid. Certainly they would: especially the crowd brought up on that ridiculous AOL system. Especially the nuts used to shelling out over $100 a month for cable TV. TV was and should always be free. Just like the Net! 85 years ago today, according to what I think I saw early this morning on WRGB Channel 6 News, the first TV newscast was broadcast. The Schenectady station was once Channel 4 - you can google or bing it if you want to fact-check.

Coming over the weekend: a very special (nothing to do with Mother's Day) blog article. I'm not sure which of my blogs it will be published on. Maybe all of them. We'll see. Have a great day!

Good evening! I couldn't be more delighted that Google offered the option of implementing the native G+ commenting system. I still have all the old blog*spot comments (and all the facebook comments) and no longer have to worry about policing for those lunatics with nothing better to do than drop stinky-link laden B.S. comments.

I have been running across this adapted quote from the Qu'ran a lot in recent days: "God helps those who help themselves." [Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves (Quran, 13:11)] So, help yourselves to some KNOWLEDGE, courtesy of moi.

Cleveland Sex Slaves

For a long long time I have suspected that many of America's "Missing Persons" were victims of sinister minds. There are just too many bodies that are never found to solve these mysteries.

Once upon a time I wrote “Sex slavery is very active in the US Latino community…” Missing Persons & Sex Slavery: Is This Where They’ve Gone?

I think my hunch is right and more of these cases will surface, hopefully with live-to-tell results.

Blogs Will Be Stronger Than Ever

After all the BS about blogging falling out of favor, I'm personally convinced that the medium will only grow stronger, particularly as newspaper paywalls become the norm.

Take a look at the image. How many newpaper or magazine sites do you routinely check for news? Multiply that number by the number of dollars you will pay - Now, THAT is the question. $1 for a month's trial is one thing, but suppose they say, okay, you like it? $9.99 a month. For the sake of argument, let us say you have ten sites you routinely visit for news and feature articles. Multiply. You are NOT going to shell out $100 a month for this info, are you? Maybe you will - many of you are foolish enough to be paying as much for your monthly dose of cable TV. And consider you are already paying for your internet service. Hey, you ARE stupid!

You see where this is going?

My blogs are free. Unless Google and - or WordPress decide to charge access fees (shhhh - don't give 'em any ideas) - you can bet BLOGS will provide you with a steady stream of news - no strings atached!

So, Bfffft! to the morons who say blogging is dying!

Europe's 'black economy' shrank in 2012

Don't go to sleep thinking US unemployment numbers "look better" or that Wall Street seems to have a taken an upward stride... or that gasoline prices are going down. The recession is not over yet. Too many people are out of work and aren't counted anymore. The stock market can be manipulated by many things, analog and digital. The farther gas prices drop, the closer we are to the next disaster that sends them through and over the 4-dollar-a-gallon price point.

But what about "illegal work and undeclared transactions" on American soil? Does the health of underground exchange reflect or predict the health of the overall economy?

Paris [Agence France-Presse] — Undeclared economic activity, the so-called "black economy," in Europe shrank last year to 19.0 percent of declared output from 19.3 percent in 2011, a study for the Visa credit card company indicated on Monday.

University at Albany students staged a May Day rally Wednesday to protest several issues, including the installation of Sodexho as the campuswide food service provider. Student-activists representing the "Students Revolutionary Coalition" claim they are defending both workers’ rights and the rights of fellow students to diversity and dignity on the UAlbany campus.

Free Comic Book Day May 4 2013

Celebrate the unique American art form!

Superheroes, zombies and well-meaning sponges are just some of the stars of comic books that will be given away free as part of the 12th annual “Free Comic Book Day.”

Just a day after comic-book hero Iron Man returns to theaters, Iron Man and other comics stars will be available in free comics from local comic shops celebrating Free Comic Book Day.

A variety of free comics, featuring characters ranging from Spongebob Squarepants to the heroes of “The Walking Dead” will be available at comic book stores throughout the world on Saturday, May 4.

Robert Kirkman, who created “The Walking Dead,” hopes fans of the show will seek out comic shops.

“I'm very proud of the fact that the success of The Walking Dead show is bringing people into comic shops and introducing them to our fine medium,” Kirkman said at “I hear constantly from tons of retailers talking about how new faces appear in their shops looking for The Walking Dead. Hopefully being able to give something out for free will ramp up that phenomenon.”

Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the 20th century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers.

More than 4.6 million free comic books are expected to be given away at more than 2,000 participating locations. The local comic book shop pays for these books at a discounted rate to give away to clientele. This is the 12th year for Free Comic Book Day, which was created by retailer Joe Field.

Field is also the former president of comics retailer association ComicsPRO.

In New York's Hudson Valley, these comics can be found at:

Dream Book With A Difference?

This is more a 'marker' for me than a post for you. In the past I've tried to interpret vivid dreams with "dreambooks" that most of the time offer situations that don't apply to my particular dream.

A few weeks ago someone gave me a new book about dreams. Lo and behold, the first instance of looking for 'meaning' in a symbol seems accurate.

I cannot go into explicit detail, but this is what happened in 'real life' : someone asked me a question about something. At the time, my mind was working on another project and I shot back what turned out to be the wrong answer. I was then accused of doing something that I did not do, and got 'called on the carpet' for it. Basically, a big misunderstanding, but no less cause for concern on my part.

In the dream, several people on our street had missiles on portable launchers strategically placed in their backyards. But my neighbor's missile was pointing down, directly at the first floor of my house. No doubt my brain saved the image of the missile from what I saw on BBC world news the other night in a story about Syria and Lebanon.

The interpretation by the book is really interesting, in that it exactly describes the 'accusation situation' as described above:

MISSILE: reveals a harmful negative aimed at one's experience. This could be generated by self to another.

I'll add more entries on this or perhaps extend this post or use comments to add more if any more indeed comes of this!
