#Periscope is now available for Android!

Just by foolish chance, I had the phone nearby and wasn't busy when the LIVE announcement came via twitter (on Periscope, of course) that Periscope is now available for Android phones! I was just earlier in the week talking with a co-worker who expressed his wish that he too could be part of the Periscope experience, but no iPhone, no Periscope. Well, NOW it's no iPhone, no cry...

Here is How to Use Periscope on Android [SlideShare Tutorial].

You should also definitely read the full Periscope tutorial here, plus follow awesome Ana on Periscope @AnaHoffman.

"To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time." Elie Wiesel, Night

There are some dearly departed that are not dear at all to me: schnooks like Robin Williams who "have it all" then take the coward's way out.

There are others more dastardly - evil creatures who decide to end it all but take other innocent souls along for the ride. Like the pilot who took the German airliner down. A friend of mine said she wished she could go back in time to the day before he killed the passengers, corner him in a bathroom, and drown him in the toilet. But that got me thinking: suppose a person on the plane had plans to mass-murder thousands. Suppose another person on the plane had the scientific formula to cure all disease. Thinking harder, what if the man who would have been the father of an evil dictator who would eclipse Hitler were aboard the jet? How many recent airline crashes may have affected world history? We'll never know and we sure can get migraines trying to figure it all out.

There are some who believe that fallen angels (Jinns) "whisper" in the ears of weakened souls, causing them to take their own lives. Jinns, they say, plant other evil thoughts - Christians call that "temptation." How resistant is YOUR soul?

But today I pause here to remember someone I didn't even know. You can read the story and ask yourself is there anyone in your life who might be saved by one kind word or deed. Better yet, just BE kind in word and deed - you may help someone and not even know it!

Today is Grace's Day here on this blog. Say a prayer for Grace, and for your own loved ones.

From an earlier article, many posts ago...

There is an old African proverb that goes something like "When you walk out of your house this morning, there is no guarantee you will return tonight."

"Why can't we ever break down and cry?"

There are things that happen, accidents and incidents. "Life happens," they say. We try to live our lives the best we can, but often overlook the fact that every single one of our neighbors, and every person we encounter throughout the day, no matter how old or young they are, how they dress, act or look--- every person has his or her own angels holding them up and / or demons chipping away at sanity. Early Islam often referred to these entities as "jinns" and that is said to be where the origin of the notion of "genies" ...

If you are down and troubled, find someone to talk to. Look around - find some real "analog" folks! For every loser trolling the web for less than honorable purposes, there are a hundred wonderful people who would love to be, maybe even need to be, your friend. Just take your time and be careful. (Like human beings, a Jinn can also be good, evil, or neutrally benevolent.- More on Jinns after the jump!)

"Wish I could rewind time I would change SO much" ~ Grace Maney

Via WikiPedia ::: In Islamic theology jinn are said to be creatures with free will, made from smokeless fire by Allah as humans were made of clay, among other things. According to the Qur'an, jinn have free will, and ʾIblīs abused this freedom in front of Allah by refusing to bow to Adam when Allah ordered angels and jinn to do so. For disobeying Allah, he was expelled from Paradise and called "Šayṭān" (Satan). Jinn are frequently mentioned in the Qur'an: Surah 72 (named Sūrat al-Jinn) is named after the jinn, and has a passage about them. Another surah (Sūrat al-Nās) mentions jinn in the last verse. The Qur'an also mentions that Muhammad was sent as a prophet to both "humanity and the jinn," and that prophets and messengers were sent to both communities.

Cuomo Falters

What has been a relatively smooth trip as New York Governor for Andrew Cuomo now gets interrupted. When I heard about this the other day, I uttered to someone "Guess he's no longer interested in running for the White House." I wondered how long before the criticism would begin. Now it has.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Coxsackie at 11 a.m. May 28 at the Greene Correctional Facility meeting with Corrections Officers and juvenile inmates about his proposal to raise the age of being tried as an adult to 18. On May 27, Cuomo penned an editorial in The New York Daily News calling for legislators to raise the age, saying New York and North Carolina are the only states that still prosecute 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. Cuomo also announced hiring more than 100 new correctional officers at the press conference at the prison. Click here to listen to Andrew Cuomo’s statement May 28 at the Greene Correctional Facility

Brooklyn, NY - The Conservative Party sent the following legislative memo to each legislative member urging them to vote against another unfunded state mandate and one that sends the wrong message. The memo on A 7642/S 5642 follows:

Purpose: An act to amend the criminal procedure law, the executive law, the family court act and the penal law, in relation to raising the age of criminal responsibility, and to repeal certain provisions of the criminal procedure law, relating thereto.

Party Position: No one wants to see young teens in jail or prison, but raising the age of adult criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 in New York sends the wrong message and is an unfunded mandate that counties cannot afford.

While it is understandable to want to help youngsters turn away from a life of crime by providing alternative solutions to sending 16 and 17 year olds to prison, the fact remains that unless it is a heinous crime, most young first time criminals are not sent directly to prison.

By raising the age of criminal responsibility to 18, these imprudent children, are provided -- by the government -- the opportunity to scam the system. Crime "lords" seek to have young people commit crimes because the courts are traditionally lenient with younger defendants. By raising the age, we send the wrong message to the criminal world.

This bill will cost counties by having them provide additional services they are ill prepared to pay. Counties are already burdened by far too many unfunded mandates that are driving taxpayers from New York State.

We urge you to reject this proposed bill.

The impact of Google's mobile update on small and medium sized businesses

The first study analyzing the impact of Google’s mobile update has revealed confusion and concern amongst many businesses at the inconsistent and unpredictable impact the update had caused.

The study of 2000 SMEs across the USA, released today by Koozai, a leading digital marketing agency, found businesses had experienced a drop in organic rankings and traffic even though they had optimized their websites for mobile.

Predicted as resulting in mobilegeddon for many companies with websites that weren’t mobile compliant, the latest Google update had been predicted to have a big impact on SMEs for their failure to optimize quickly enough.

Yet the survey found that 69% of businesses responded that the suggestion the update would cause mobilegeddon (that websites would disappear completely from mobile search results) was overhyped, incorrect and unhelpful.

However, 46% of businesses still claimed they had experienced changes to their rankings or traffic as a result of the Google update.

Of these 41% were concerned that they had seen a drop in rankings by at least three places and had noticed a drop in traffic as a result, some as much as 50%

A worrying 27% of these respondents had seen a drop in rankings even though they had optimized for mobile.

Of the businesses responding, 37% were said to be concerned that the update might have an impact on sales, while 44% were not worried as they said most of their sales came from desktops.

90% of Twitter video views happen on a mobile device

Immerse yourself in that headline for a moment.

It tells you why twitter's #Periscope app has taken off. I broadcast on #Periscope live from the Sawyer Fredericks homecoming concert in Albany. I was amazed how many fans Sawyer has in Europe, Asia and the UK! Even though I was the nosebleed section of the theater, everyone liked the little crappy grainy video, and asked to see it again, which #Periscope allows with a two-hour time-limit on replay.

H/T to Ana Hoffman, who tirelessly combs through all sorts of articles and data - I work in the media industry and as such am privvy to boatloads of daily information ["It's all too much..." ~ George Harrison] but there' s always something that creeps by undetected, like this

#Bitcoin NY News May 21, 2015

The NY Bitcoin Group has teamed up with BitPay to allow people from anywhere in the world to buy pizza for the children at The Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center in celebration of Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22.

On May 18, 2010, a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz out of Florida was hungry one night and posted on a Bitcoin forum the following: "I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas ... like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!" His wish was granted four days later by a gentleman in the UK who ordered the pizzas to Laszlo's house with his credit card in exchange for the 10,000 bitcoins (around $30 at that time's exchange rate).

Today those 10,000 bitcoins are worth approximately $2,400,000.

How Safe Is "The Cloud"?: The situation is more complex than cloud promoters would have you believe.

Friends, this is why "Cloud Computing" is wrong wrong wrong and a one-way ticket to losing the digital freedom you think you have now!

"What happens if the cloud provider is hacked? What if their data – which is actually your data – gets leaked by a rogue employee? What if they give up your data in light of a government subpoena?
It comes down to this: don’t put data on a cloud if you wouldn’t be comfortable with that data being exposed at some time in the future." ~ makeuseof blog

They claim the future of information technology is in cloud-based applications. When governments can seize the entire cloud

7 Things To Know About Facebook Instant Articles

This is big.

And it's all about control.

Instant Articles is basically Flipboard inside of Facebook. It creates a "third" internet, a proprietary 1990s' AOL form of narrowcasted channel, like an old BBS. (There's the 'raw' WWW intenet and 'darknet', in case you were wondering about my reference to a third net.) The question that is not being asked is WHO ultimately will be able to publish Instant Articles? A chosen few?

I have nothing against facebook. I've incorporated fb comments right here on the blog. I believe in keeping "all channels open." I also know that the same kind of folks who embraced CompuServe and early AOL embrace facebook for similar reasons. It's a way to stay in touch with family, friends and people with similar interests, share news and information, all within what is perceived as a more "protective" and safe environment, sort of a "gated community" within the scope of the big bad internet.

This isn't just a Trojan horse; this is a Trojan horse draped in gold chains and being ridden by Beyoncé

The always sharp Ana Hoffman has summarized the service here - be sure to scroll down, view (and think about) the reader comments!

Lewis DVorkin, Forbes Staff - comments - "I do think the Facebook 'Instant Stories' can work because of its scale and the fact that most news media outlets lack coherent mobile strategies — or a mobile strategy at all. News organizations know how to produce stories, but fail at producing product for a new generation on consumers."

#TaylorSwift 'Bad Blood' Video

— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) May 18, 2015

Finally. We've seen teasers and posters and tweets about the "Bad Blood" video for weeks now, and at last night's Billboard Awards it was finally revealed. The slickly produced video of the Kendrick Lamar-containing, remixed song references Kill Bill, Sin City, Fifth Element, some sort of post-apocalyptic Xena and, yes, Law & Order: SVU and Grey's…

Browserology 101

Browser befuddlement!

There's nothing more frustrating than having browser issues. From injected ads to websites that won't display to auto-play features we can't seem to turn off, there always seems to be a problem...

Beware of the "cloud-browsers" which is another step to try to take control of all things computer out of your hands and out of your control. When the day arrives that these viewers become mandatory, there may not be a workaround - except, maybe, just maybe downloading and installing some sort of "developer" version that works offline.

I've issued numerous warnings about the "cloud" concept. I have a wonderful IBM T42 ThinkPad that I have customized to enhance my OFFLINE experience.

I have taken steps not only to secure the system when I'm ONline, but I have four browser options PLUS a sweet little old browser "off by one" --- Off By One Web Browser may be the world's smallest and fastest web browser with full HTML 3.2 support. It is a completely self-contained, stand-alone 1.2 MB application with no dependencies on any other browser or browser component. For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. There's a link to download it after the jump. And it sometimes renders and reveals webpages when the others can't or won't. It comes in very handy when I have to use dial-up in a pinch (T42 has a phone plug as well as wi-fi and USB for a broadband dongle; multiple options to connect to the net!)
